Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is ongoing, persistent pain that lasts longer than three months. It is usually caused by irritations or conditions affecting the nerves of the central nervous system including the brain and spinal cord. Chronic pain can be unrelenting and lead to physical impairment if not managed properly.

Symptoms

The symptoms of chronic pain range from soreness and stiffness or a mild to severe pain, to a sharp, electrical pain. It can disrupt sleep, causing tiredness and weakening the immune system. Some people experience depression and anxiety and withdraw from their usual work and activity.

Diagnosis and Treatment Options

To diagnose chronic pain, Dr Tollesson will evaluate your medical history, signs and symptoms, and do a physical and neurological examination. He will also suggest diagnostic tests such as x-rays, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans to detect any injuries or other causes of symptoms.
