Ulnar Nerve Decompression
The ulnar nerve passes through the elbow and can become compressed or irritated when it is trapped by surrounding bone, muscle, or soft tissue. Compression may also occur as a result of an accident, injury, or repetitive strain.
Symptoms
Compression of the ulnar nerve can cause:
- Pain in the elbow and forearm
- Tingling or numbness in the hand, particularly in the ring and little fingers
- Weakness in the hand and reduced grip strength in some cases
Diagnosis and Treatment Options
To diagnose ulnar nerve compression, Dr Tollesson will review your medical history, assess your signs and symptoms, and perform a physical and neurological examination. This may include testing muscle strength, sensation, and reflexes. Additional diagnostic tests may also be recommended to confirm the diagnosis and determine the severity of nerve compression.
Conservative treatment options may include pain relief medication, anti-inflammatory medication, and physiotherapy. Symptoms can often be improved by avoiding positions or activities that place pressure on the nerve and by making ergonomic adjustments where possible. For example, taking regular breaks from repetitive work tasks or driving, and modifying sleeping positions if they contribute to symptoms.
Surgery
For patients with persistent symptoms or when non-surgical treatments have not been effective, ulnar nerve decompression surgery may be recommended.
During the procedure, an incision is made at the back of the elbow, and the ulnar nerve is carefully released from any tissue, muscle, or bone that is compressing it. The nerve may then be repositioned into its normal anatomical pathway. If the existing tunnel is unsuitable or damaged, the surgeon may create a new pathway to protect the nerve and reduce the risk of further compression.
